Thanks for Those Who Encourage Us

God’s grace and peace to you this day

We had an opportunity to be with family this weekend and see the show “On Your Feet!”   The show tells the story of Gloria Estefan’s rise to fame as a singer.  One of my favorite characters in the show was Gloria’s grandmother; she was such an encourager for the young girl. Even as Gloria grew older her grandmother never lost sight of that young girl’s dream to sing and dance. Gloria’s grandmother was always in the background but her actions and words of encouragement often led to turning points in Gloria’s life. Grandmother’s was a voice of wisdom and offered a bigger perspective on life.  We all need people like that in our lives.  People who can encourage us, know our strengths and offer us a bigger perspective of life especially in the midst of daily routines and grinds.  I have been fortunate enough to have some of those people in my life and most of them were people of deep faith in God.

As you think about people who have encouraged and influenced you in your life, what names and faces, what experiences come to mind?  How were those people instrumental in making you the person you are today?  How did they influence your faith and understanding of God? Of yourself?  Of your gifts and talents?

Not all people are fortunate enough to have those encouragers and visionaries in their lives but perhaps those of us who have experienced that can be “those people” for others.  How do we pay forward that encouragement to others?  In our faith journeys, how do we encourage others along the way?  How do others encourage us?

May you take time today to give thanks for those people in your life who make a difference.  Maybe you can thank them in person, write a note or if they are no longer in this world, give thanks to God for the time you had with them. Then think about how you might encourage another.  Giving of yourself to encourage and sustain another is a wonderful way to celebrate in this season of Advent and Christmas!

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Judy
