During the month of March, Indiana will pick up 2.5 to 3 minutes of additional sunlight per day. By March 31, we’ll have over an hour of daylight more than we do now, late in February (never mind the switch to Daylight Saving Time on March 8).

We gain physical light, and as we continue into Lent, Christians also seek spiritual light. In our personal devotions, in our prayers, in Bible study and in worship, we seek to draw closer to “the light of the world.”

Our actions in the community express that light. The church food baskets and children’s gifts make our concern for others visible during the holiday season. The church participation in Community Meals does that during the rest of the year, too. Other projects, like our financial support for The Shelter, are less visible but still a sharing of light.

Our lives outside of church share the light most effectively. We tell others what we believe in the actions we take and the opinions we express. Our faith in God empowers the loving actions we take toward others.

Our former pastor, Rev. Karel Hanhart, said this recently: “I hope First Presbyterian in Connersville is still holding up a candle in these dark times. The light of one candle changes everything. … Sometimes a presence will go far. People know your stances. … I am very grateful for you and First Presbyterian Connersville. Y’all have held up a light of inclusion, compass, and justice. People know that there is another viewpoint.”

May God guide us toward the light.
